Wineglass Bay – Must See Attractions & Things To Do

This is just a short article highlighting some of the very best things that Tasmania has to offer.

A lot of people don’t realize how amazing this island state actually is and for my money, it’s one of the greatest places on Earth.

There is so much history, culture, and stunning natural beauty in this part of Australia – from Cradle Mountain National Park to the beautiful townships along the east coast – there are plenty of great things to see and do in Wineglass Bay that most visitors simply can’t fit into a typical itinerary.

I’ve been lucky enough to spend a fair bit of time out here over my lifetime and if you’re going to visit Tasmania then please make sure you check out these “must-see” attractions & things to do in Wineglass Bay…

1. Visit Cradle Mountain

– Although this isn’t directly in Wineglass Bay, it’s probably the most important thing to do if you’re heading out here.

This UNESCO World Heritage Listed National Park is absolutely stunning and will take your breath away with its incredible natural beauty.

Set up base in the picturesque little township of Dove Lake and then set off on one of several great walking tracks that lead into this unforgettable landscape.

2 . Kayak The D’Entrecasteaux Channel

– If you enjoy kayaking, then there’s no better place to paddle around than along the D’Entrecasteaux Channel which separates Bruny Island from mainland Tasmania There are plenty of companies offering guided tours along this beautiful stretch of water and if you’re lucky, you’ll also see plenty of fur seals, dolphins, and even whales as your paddle around.

3. Hike Through The Remarkable Ravines Of Maria Island

– One of the best things to do in Wineglass Bay Tasmania is definitely to head over the small island separating the D’Entrecasteaux Channel from Great Oyster Bay which has an incredible network of hiking trails that are simply stunning.

There are several different walks that allow you to take in this natural beauty but my personal favorite was along the top ridgeline overlooking the coastal scrubland below.

If you enjoy hiking, then Maria Island should be right near the top of your list!

4 . See Some Wildlife At Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary

– If you’re a nature lover and enjoy getting up close to some of Australia’s incredible native wildlife, then Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary is the perfect place for you.

Located on the outskirts of Hobart Town, this amazing facility has plenty of different animals that need rescuing so if you want to see some Tasmanian Devils, kangaroos, wombats, and even an echidna, or two – it’s definitely worth checking out on your visit to Wineglass Bay.

5 . Take A Self-Guided Scenic Drive Around The East Coast

– If you don’t have time to check out any of the great walking trails in Wineglass Bay but still want to take in some of this beautiful scenery, then why not take a self-guided scenic drive through the townships of Binalong Bay, St Helens, and St Marys.

There are plenty of places to stop along the way but I’d recommend taking in views at Mt Barrow Lookout which is just south of St Marys Town.

6 . Visit The Remarkable Elephant House

– This might be one of those iconic Wineglass Bay attractions that aren’t necessarily well known around this part of Australia but trust me when I say it’s worth checking out.

This incredible house has been built into the side of an extraordinary sandstone cliff face and looks like something straight out of a fairytale book.

Unfortunately, you can’t actually go inside so make sure you check out the photos on their website before you set off to make the most of your visit.

7 . Head Out On A Boat Trip With Bonorong Cruises

– Although there are plenty of amazing things to see and do in Wineglass Bay, there are also a few species that can only be seen by boat.

One of these is the famous spotted “bottlenose” dolphin which swims all around this part of Tasmania and can easily be sighted from a well-equipped vessel.

There are several companies offering boat trips so if you’re looking for something a little more exciting than just taking in the scenery on land, then check out our page on the best boat tours in Hobart Town here.
